Description
Nos. 53-57 and Rudge House are three houses that were formerly an inn and shops, dating from the 17th century, with early to mid-19th century refacing. The buildings are timber framed with painted brick nogging on a rubblestone plinth, and the front has been refaced in painted brick. They have a plain tile roof and likely consist of five framed bays, standing two storeys tall. There is an off-centre brick ridge stack to the left.
The framing features square panels with long tension braces. On the first floor, there are five windows with glazing bar sashes. To the left, there are three mid-19th century former shop windows with thin wooden mullions and transoms, while the window to the right has a pilastered surround. Between the first and second windows from the left, there is a mid-19th century half-glazed door with margin lights, two lower panels, and a doorcase with pilaster strips, a frieze, and a cornice hood. The door between the second and third windows from the left has six flush panels (the top four are glazed) and a pilastered surround. To the right, there is a late-19th century shop front with two plate glass windows flanking a recessed half-glazed door that is off-centre to the left.
At the rear, there are late-19th and 20th century additions to the right. Inside, the buildings feature chamfered and stopped beams. This property was formerly known as the Red Lion Inn.
