Description

Nos 120, 122, and 124 High Street is a building that originally served as a house and is now a pair of shops. It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, with an early 19th-century refronting and some alterations. Inside, there is some timber framing that has been covered with rendered cladding, and the roof is concealed with plain tiles. The original layout is somewhat unclear, but it likely features a 16th-century range that runs parallel to the street, with 17th-century additions at the rear. The front has been refronted and re-roofed, and there are 20th-century additions at the back of numbers 122 and 124 that are not of special interest.

The elevation facing High Street has three storeys and three bays. The shop fronts are from the 20th century and are not of special interest. On the first floor, there are three small-pane, three-light casement windows and a projecting clock. The second floor features unequally hung twelve-pane sash windows in the first and second bays, with a late 20th-century small-pane window in the third bay. The building has a parapet with stone coping and chimney stacks at the left end and between the right-hand bays.

Inside, some members of the timber frame are exposed, including posts in the rear wing of numbers 122 and 124, an arched wind-brace in the front range of number 120, and a jowled post in the rear wall of numbers 122 and 124. There are large chamfered cross-beams with lambs tongue stops in both properties, arched braces in the left-hand wall on the first floor, and a tie with queen posts in numbers 122 and 124. The building was formerly part of the Red Lion Public House.
