Description

This building consists of a barn, cowhouse, and stables, located approximately 10 metres to the east of Whitcott Hall. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid to late 19th century. The structure features a weatherboarded timber frame set on a coursed limestone rubble plinth, with later timber-framed and coursed and squared limestone additions, all topped with stone slate roofs.

The layout is U-shaped, comprising a four-bay cowhouse range and a three-bay barn and stable range positioned at right angles. The building is two storeys high, with 17th-century framing characterized by square panels. The barn on the left has a boarded loft door in the gable end, a boarded door in the high plinth below, and a two-leaf boarded door on the right-hand return front, along with a catslide lean-to to the north. The central range includes an open carriageway to the left and an open-fronted tallet to the right, which was likely originally weatherboarded, featuring three boarded cowhouse doors below. To the right is the stable and granary, which has a weatherboarded gable end and two boarded windows beneath. The left-hand return front has an open carriageway to the left, two boarded windows in the centre, and a two-leaf boarded door on the ground floor to the right.

Inside, the barn and cowhouse have tie-beam trusses with queen struts, and the collar and tie-beam truss to the south features queen struts and V-struts above the collar.
