Description
Two houses with shops, dating from the early 19th century, located on Church Street in Cleobury Mortimer. The houses are constructed of brick with a cogged dentil course at the eaves, and have a slate roof with a steeper plain-tiled section at the rear. Brick ridge stacks are centrally positioned.
The exterior presents a three-storey, two-window arrangement. The upper floors feature 8/8 sash windows in openings with painted stone lintels. Number 11, on the right, has a mid-19th century double-fronted shop window with a curved fascia, end brackets, and a 6-panelled door with a top light. Number 12, on the left, has a 19th century bowed sash window forming a shop front, featuring a bowed fascia and fluted architraves. To the left of the shop front is a glazed panelled door with a projecting leaded canopy. A 3-light opening with a brick segmental arch is located at a high level in the left return gable of Number 12.
The rear elevation of Number 11 features 19th century French windows with moulded casement heads at the first floor, and a 2-light casement and a 20th century casement window at the second floor. Number 12 has an 8/8 sash window with a brick segmental arch and a 20th century stable door at the first floor. The ground floor of Number 12 is partly covered by a brick flat-roofed extension, and a recessed 2-light casement window is at the second floor.
The interior was not inspected during listing. The group value derives from the building’s contribution to the streetscape and its representation of early 19th century commercial and domestic architecture.
