Description

The Royal Fountain Inn is an inn that features early 19th-century alterations to a 17th-century core, with 20th-century extensions. It is constructed of painted brick with a dentil course at the eaves, and has a timber frame at the rear. The roof is covered with old plain tiles and has two pitches, with central brick ridge stacks. The building has a three-bay framed range with an extension at the west end.

The exterior is two stories high and has a four-window range of two-light casements. The right end is stepped up over a carriageway entrance, with the outer pair of windows featuring brick segmental-arch lintels. There are three ground-floor 19th-century box bay windows. The central entrance has a plain door with a projecting flat canopy above it, and to the left of the elevation is a glazed panelled door in a segmental-arched opening. The carriageway to the right has a segmental-arched opening with plain boarded doors.

At the rear, there is a large brick segmental-arched carriageway opening to the left, with a two-light casement above it, also featuring a brick segmental arch. In the center, there is a square-framed timber frame that is three panels high with inset casements, and raised eaves that form a flat-roofed projection with 20th-century casements and a glazed door. The right side is covered by late 20th-century painted brick extensions that are single and two stories high with flat roofs.

Inside, the ground floor has three bays, with the center bay featuring an inserted first floor supported by deep chamfered bridging beams, along with subsidiary chamfered joists and cross joists.
