Description

Two houses with shops, dating from the late 18th century, were later altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are located on Castlegate, Malton. The buildings are constructed of orange and vitreous brick in an English garden-wall bond, with a pantile roof and brick stacks. The front of the building is five windows wide, across two storeys.

Number 25 has a double shop front featuring plain pilasters and a cornice. It has glazed double doors with an overlight, recessed between plate-glass windows set above rendered risers. The first floor features a single-pane sash window to the left and a pair of similar windows to the right, each with a flat arch of gauged brick and renewed stone keyblocks.

Number 27 has a central entrance incorporated into a 19th-century shop front with plain pilasters, shaped imposts, and a moulded cornice. A flight of five steps leads to a 20th-century replacement door, above which is an overlight. A shop window to the left has been partly bricked up and altered to include a pair of 12-pane top-hung windows with a continuous painted stone sill. A similar single window is located to the right, and there are two windows on the first floor. The centre first-floor window has been blocked. All windows feature flat arches of gauged brick with painted keyblocks. The building has a brick dentil eaves course. A flat-topped dormer with a 2x4-pane sliding sash window is located in the attic of number 25, and a roof light is present on number 27.
