Description
78 Castlegate is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from around 1800, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of orange-red brick laid in Flemish bond on a rendered plinth. The building features coped gables and moulded kneelers on a pantile roof, with a brick stack at the left end.
The front of the building is three stories high and has four windows. To the right of the center, there is a 20th-century glazed door with a divided overlight. On the left side of the door, there are two 12-pane sash windows, and one 12-pane sash window is located to the right. Above the door, the first-floor window is a narrow 8-pane sash, flanked by two 12-pane sashes. On the second floor, all windows are unequal 9-pane sashes. Each window has stone sills, and all openings feature flat arches made of gauged brick, which are now rendered. The building retains paired eaves brackets, although the guttering has been removed.
