Description
76 Castlegate is a house dating from the late 18th century, with later alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared stone, which has been raised in orange-red brick using English garden-wall bond. The house features rendered lintels and a timber doorcase, along with a coped right gable and a shaped kneeler on the pantile roof, which has a rebuilt brick stack at the left end.
The building has a central-entry plan and a three-storey front with three windows. The doorcase is pedimented and supported by fluted pilasters with imposts and a dentil cornice. The entrance includes a six-panel door with an overlight set back in panelled reveals. The outer windows on the ground and first floors are tripartite, featuring 12-pane centre sashes, while the centre of the first floor and all windows on the second floor also have 12-pane sashes. Each window is equipped with stone sills and wedge lintels.
