Description
This is a house located at 88 Castlegate in Malton, dating from the late 18th century, with alterations and a new front added in the mid-19th century. The front section is made of painted brick in Flemish bond and features a timber doorcase. The rear wing is constructed from coursed rubble stone, raised with variegated brick in English garden-wall bond. The building has stone-coped gables and shaped kneelers on pantile roofs, with a brick chimney stack at the right end of the front range and a central ridge stack on the wing.
The house has a two-storey front with three windows. On the left side, there is a plain pilaster doorcase with a cornice hood supported by heavy carved brackets, leading to a four-panel door with a divided overlight. To the right, there are two ground floor windows that are boarded up, and a blocked window in the center of the first floor, situated between two 12-pane sash windows. All windows feature painted keyed flat arches and stone sills. The rear wing has three storeys with two windows. The ground floor has a 12-pane sash window in the center, a 19th-century door to the right, and a blocked doorway to the left. The first floor contains two 12-pane sashes with painted timber lintels, while the second floor has two squat 12-pane sashes. The house was noted to be in a dilapidated condition at the time of review in 1990.
