Description
51 and 52 Castlegate are a pair of houses, now converted into flats, dating from the early 19th century, with some modernisation in the 20th century. They are built from pink and cream mottled brick in Flemish bond, with painted areas beneath the ground floor windows. The buildings feature stone gable copings and moulded kneelers on a pantile roof, which has brick stacks at the right end and in the centre.
The structure has three storeys and a basement, with a four-window front. The cellar openings beneath the ground floor windows have been altered. There are two replacement end doors; the left door has an overlight, while the right door is accessed by steps. Between the doors, there are two 16-pane sash windows, and above them, two similar windows are located in the centre of the first and second floors. On the first floor, the outer windows are unequal 9-pane sashes, which sit beneath 12-pane second floor sashes in extended frames. All openings are topped with painted wedge lintels.
