Description

The pair of cottages at 19 and 21 Castlegate date from the late 18th century, with a refronting in the early 19th century and later 19th-century alterations. The front of the cottages is built of orange-red brick in an English garden-wall bond, set on a stone plinth. The rear is of coursed squared stone. They have stone copings, moulded kneelers, a pantile roof, and brick end stacks. The cottages are two storeys high, with cellars, and have a three-window front. A pair of 20th-century doors with overlights are centrally located, approached by a single flight of steps. Cellar windows with 2x9-pane sliding sashes are situated beneath the ground-floor windows. The remaining windows are 4-pane sashes with painted stone sills; the centre first-floor window is blind. All openings have painted wedge lintels. At the rear, a first-floor window has a 2x12-pane sliding sash with a keyed wedge lintel on the right side, and a similar opening with a 4-pane sash on the left side.
