Description

This early 19th century building, originally a house and now comprising two shops, stands on Castlegate in Malton. The front is constructed of orange-red brick in an English garden-wall bond. The left gable has a coped detail and a moulded kneeler, while brick end stacks rise from the pantile roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic, and has a three-window front. The ground floor features two single shop fronts, which incorporate partly panelled pilasters on moulded bases, dentilled moulded imposts beneath fluted blocks, a panelled frieze, and a dentilled moulded cornice above. The central twin elliptical arches have ornate console keyblocks, and contain recessed, half-glazed and panelled shop doors with overlights in panelled reveals. The shop windows are half-canted, set over moulded stone risers. The left window is bowed with moulded mullions, while the right is plate glass. The first floor has 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills and wedge lintels. Raking dormers with unequal 12-pane sashes light the attic.
