Description

No. 2 Old Maltongate is a shop with domestic accommodation above, built in the mid-19th century. It features pink and cream mottled brick arranged in English garden-wall bond, sitting on a stone plinth, with painted stone keyblocks and a moulded timber eaves cornice. The roof is slate, hipped over a corner bay, with brick stacks at each end. The building has an L-shaped plan and is located on a corner site, rising three stories high.

The front facing Old Maltongate has a three-window arrangement, while the Castlegate side has two windows, with a canted corner bay in between. On the Old Maltongate front, to the left, there is a four-panel door with an overlight, set beneath a segmental brick arch with a triple keyblock. Further left is a narrow single-pane sash window. The shop entrance is in the center, featuring a half-glazed shop door with an overlight, beneath a segmental arch with a triple keyblock and a faceted keystone. To the right is a shop window consisting of two round-arcaded Gothick-glazed lights within a triple-keyed round-arched opening. The ground-floor windows on the Castlegate front are similar in style.

The first- and second-floor windows throughout the building are four-pane sashes. The first-floor windows have keyed segmental arches, while the second-floor windows are squat with flat arches. All windows, except for those in the shop, have painted stone sills. Additionally, on the Old Maltongate front, between the ground and first floors to the left of the shop door, there is a late 19th-century painted metal street sign that reads: OLD MALTONGATE/[<-pointing hand] TO PICKERING.
