Description

10 and 12 Castlegate are two shops dating from the mid-19th century. They are constructed from pink and cream mottled brick in English garden-wall bond, with orange-red brick quoins and a timber eaves band. The slate roof is hipped at the corner and features brick stacks to the left of the hip and at the center of the right return.

The Castlegate front has two storeys and an attic, with three windows. The entrance to No. 10 is located in a canted corner on the right, featuring half-glazed and panelled double doors with an overlight. To the left, No. 12 has a similar single door and overlight situated between plate-glass shop windows with transoms. The ground floor openings are segment-headed and set beneath brick arches. The first floor windows are 4-pane sashes with painted stone sills, positioned beneath flat brick arches. A flat eaves band runs along the top, and No. 12 has a gabled dormer with a 4-pane sash.

The Wells Lane front also has two storeys and an attic, with four windows. At the right end, there is a round-arched passage door, with a blocked window opening to the left. Further left are two 12-pane sash windows. At the left end, there is a segment-headed 6-pane shop window with a transom, situated between tall round-arched niches that have chamfered stone sills. The remaining details mirror those of the Castlegate front. This building is included for its group value.
