Description
St Mary's Community Centre is a Roman Catholic chapel, now serving as a community centre for the Roman Catholic Church of St Leonard. It was built in 1837. The front is made of painted rendered stone, while the rear is constructed from blackened brick in English garden-wall bond. The building features a slate roof with a coped gable and a gable cross.
The two-storey, two-window gabled front faces the street and has a chamfered plinth and raised quoins. Central double doors made of six raised-and-fielded panels are topped by a radial-glazed fanlight, which is divided by a moulded transom and semicircular hood that is painted with the words "ST MARY'S COMMUNITY CENTRE." Above the doors, there are two inserted segment-headed cross windows in plain raised surrounds, set above a moulded band that is interrupted by painted stone window sills. The gable end has a pedimented design with a raised eaves band and contains a blind lunette in a moulded surround that encloses a painted cartouche.
At the rear, there is a tall round-arched window with a radial-glazed head and a vesica centre light. The interior is said to feature a screen of coupled fluted Ionic columns at the east end.
