Description
R Yates and Sons is an iron foundry, now functioning as engineering works, built in the mid-19th century with later alterations. It was constructed for R Yates and Sons Ltd. The building features pink and cream mottled brick in stretcher bond, with orange-red brick quoins and sandstone dressings, topped by a slate roof with coped gables. The structure is L-shaped on plan and consists of a two-storey, five-bay range, with a three-bay crosswing gable at the right end, all set on a double chamfered plinth. The bays are separated by pilasters on double chamfered bases.
The central glazed doors, now disused, are located in the five-bay range and are set beneath a semicircular brick quoined arch supported by moulded stone imposts and a coved hood. The tympanum above contains wooden panels with painted inscriptions: "R YATES & SONS LTD Established.1845" and "Ransomes Patent, Ploughs and Irons, Kept in Stock." Above the arch, there are two keyed oculi flanking a stepped brick keyblock. The ground floor windows on either side are segment-headed with chamfered stone sills, while the first-floor windows have square-arched quoined surrounds above a stone sillband. A broad stepped brick eaves cornice tops the structure.
The crosswing gable features a round-arched entrance of two orders, with glazed doors and a fanlight, situated between tall round-headed windows. Above the entrance is a four-light window with single-pane sashes, flanked by keyed oculi. The stepped brick gable eaves band encloses a painted panel displaying the RY cipher between the words "EST.1845."
On the right return, the building rises two storeys and a basement, with a twelve-bay front. The bays are divided by pilasters on a basement plinth, featuring plain imposts and roundels in frieze blocks. A tall segment-arched doorway with steel double doors and a double-transomed overlight is located towards the right end. The basement openings are segment-arched, and the ground and first-floor windows are tripartite, with those on the ground floor featuring transoms beneath cambered arches; some of these have been altered.
