Description
18 and 20 Castlegate are two houses that have been converted into shops and offices. They were built in the mid-19th century. The left wall of No. 20 was rebuilt in the 20th century, likely due to the demolition of an adjacent building. The front of No. 20 features pink and cream mottled brick in an English garden-wall bond, while No. 18 is painted. Both have a stone doorcase and a painted stone plinth that serves as risers for the shop windows. The roofs are shallow pitched, with No. 18 covered in tile and No. 20 in corrugated pantile, and there are three brick ridge stacks, two of which are truncated.
The two-storey building has a six-window front. No. 18 has a full-width shop front with part-grooved pilasters and moulded imposts, supported by grooved and gableted corbels, a plain frieze, and a dentil cornice. It features half-glazed and panelled double doors between plate glass windows. No. 20 has a double shop front made of cast-iron composite columns with fluted inserts and a dentilled moulded cornice. Its half-glazed and panelled double doors are set beneath an overlight and are recessed between half-canted plate-glass windows over moulded risers. At the left end, there is a segment-arched doorway with an eared surround and a grooved volute keyblock, which also contains half-glazed and panelled double doors. The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills, set beneath cambered arches. The buildings are included for their group value.
