Description

1 and 3 Wheelgate are two houses that have been converted into offices. They date from the late 18th century and mid 19th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. The ground floor is constructed of reddish-brown brick in stretcher bond, resting on a chamfered ashlar plinth, and features rusticated ashlar pilasters. The upper floors are rendered and incised to resemble ashlar, with chamfered quoins on the 18th-century end. The building has coped gables and shaped kneelers on a slate roof, with one rendered end stack and one brick end stack.

The Wheelgate front has three storeys and four windows. The ground floor features pilasters with moulded capitals beneath a broad entablature with a modillion cornice, and there are sunk-panel doors at each end. The windows are single-pane sashes set in cambered-arched, eared, and keyed architraves with stone sills, with the windows to the left of the doors having shaped aprons. The 18th-century part has 4-pane sashes on both floors, with painted stone sills and incised wedge lintels. The first floor of the 19th-century part has a tripartite window with a single-pane sash to the left of a 4-pane sash, both with incised wedge lintels; similar windows are found on the second floor, all with stone sills. There is a moulded brick eaves cornice.

The Yorkersgate front also has three storeys and two windows. It features three bays on the ground floor, with a canted corner bay, each bay containing a single-pane sash, similar to the treatment on the Wheelgate front. The first floor has 4-pane sashes with painted stone sills, and the second floor has paired single-pane sashes.
