Description

Two houses, dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century, are located on Yorkersgate in Malton. The houses are now used as shops. They are constructed of painted brick in an English garden-wall bond. The ground floor of number 2 is rendered and painted. The roof is covered with pantiles and features brick stacks at the right end of each house.

The front of the building has three storeys and five window bays. Number 2 has a double shop front with plain pilasters and a cornice resting on grooved consoles. A half-glazed door with an overlight is located between a three-light canted window to the left and a large four-pane window to the right. Number 4 has a central half-glazed and panelled door within a pilastered doorcase, with a cornice that continues over the shop front to the right. To the left of the canted window at number 4 are glazed shop doors with an overlight, recessed to the left of a canted window with moulded glazing bars. The upper-floor windows are four-pane sashes; those on the second floor are squat, with painted stone sills and cambered arches.

Inside, a dogleg staircase with column-on-vase balusters, a moulded ramped-up handrail, and turned newels rises to the second floor.
