Description
15 and 17 Castlegate are a pair of cottages built in the late 18th century, with alterations and extensions made in the mid and late 19th century. The front features coursed squared stone on a rendered plinth, while the right side is constructed of rubble stone, partly rebuilt and extended in pink and cream mottled brick laid in stretcher bond. The left side is rendered, and there are brick stacks at the ends of the pantile roof.
The cottages are two stories high with a two-window front. No. 15 has a boarded door with an overlight to the right of a four-pane sash window, both of which have rendered wedge lintels. No. 17 has a similar door to the left of a twelve-pane sash window, which is beneath a continuous lintel. The first-floor windows are large-pane sliding sashes arranged in a 2x2 configuration, featuring keyed wedge lintels. All windows have painted stone sills, and there is a stepped eaves course.
On the right side, there is a small 2x2 sliding sash window on the ground floor, with later windows on the upper floors. The cottages are included for their group value.
