Storage Depot And Stables At Bass Maltings

The Storage Depot and Stables at Bass Maltings, built around 1900 and designed by A. Couchman, is a notable structure made of red brick with brick dressings and plain tile hipped roofs. It features a single brick ridge stack and remnants of two former lead ventilators. The building has a deep blue brick chamfered plinth, a moulded brick band at the first floor, and timber bargeboards on the gables. It is two stories tall with an eight-window façade.

The central section slightly projects and includes a plank door to the right with a glazing bar overlight, and a cast-iron glazing bar window to the left, both topped with brick segment lintels. Above these are two round-headed cast-iron windows and a similar circular window at the apex of the gable. On either side, there are single glazing bar windows, leading to single stable doors, with round-headed loft doors above in small gables.

This stable was used to house the shire horses that moved carts around the extensive industrial site. The building is an essential part of the nationally significant Maltings complex.
