Description
27 and 29 Wide Bargate are mid to late 18th century houses that have been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries and are now used as offices. The buildings are finished in stucco over red brick, with a pantile roof on No. 29 and a slate roof on No. 27, both featuring stone coped gables and three brick stacks.
The exterior is three storeys high with a five-bay front arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern. There is a second-floor band and a wooden cornice with dentils at the eaves. The ground floor has a mid-19th century projection that includes a plain frieze topped by a cast-iron balcony, which is divided by six small panelled stuccoed piers. Each side of a panelled door with a plain overlight is flanked by shallow ornamental pilasters with console brackets supporting the frieze above. This is followed by a plain sash window and another pilaster, with the one on the right marking the corner of the building. To the left, there is a 20th-century shop front. The first floor features five margin light sash windows, while the second floor has five smaller similar windows. The interior has not been inspected.
