Description
24 and 26 Wide Bargate is a house that has been converted into two shops and offices. It was built in the late 18th century and altered in the 20th century. The building is made of red brick in Flemish bond and features a hipped slate roof with a single wall stack.
The exterior has three storeys and a six-bay front, topped with a moulded eaves cornice. There is an off-centre six-panel door that is accessed by three steps, featuring a traceried overlight, panelled reveals, and a Roman Doric doorcase with attached half-columns, a modillioned pediment, and a triglyph frieze. On either side of the door are 20th-century shop fronts. On the first floor to the left, there are three glazing bar sash windows, while to the right, there are three 20th-century casements in the original openings. The second floor has a similar arrangement, but with smaller windows. All windows have rubbed flat brick arches.
Inside, the building retains a good stick baluster staircase with a wreathed handrail and panelled doors. No. 26 was included in the list on 25 September 1989.
