Description

The Central Post Office in Boston is a general post office built in 1935, designed in the Queen Anne style. It features red brick construction with Portland stone quoins and dressings, and a slate roof with lead dressings, topped with a single ridge stack that has a stone capping. The building is planned with a corner entrance and a tower.

The exterior consists of two storeys plus attics, with an ashlar plinth and a modillion stone cornice. The two facades are arranged in four bays, with three narrower bays and one broader bay at the corner, which is gabled. Between these is a three-storey circular entrance tower made of ashlar, topped with a domed copper roof. The double entrance door is framed by an open pedimented Ionic doorcase, with a panel above inscribed "Post Office" and an escutcheon in the pediment. Above this, there is a three-light window divided by stone pilasters with plain capitals, featuring a continuous curved sill with tabs and a cornice. At the top of the tower, there is a smaller similar three-light arrangement with carved flat brackets supporting the cornice.

On the Bargate elevation, to the right, there is a single tripartite glazing bar sash window with a semicircular overlight, set in a full-height semicircular-headed stone surround with a keystone. To the left, there are three glazing bar sashes in moulded stone surrounds, each with moulded sills, aprons, and a cornice above. On the first floor to the right, there is a glazing bar sash in an eaved moulded surround, topped with an open pediment containing a wreathed escutcheon. To the left, there are three more glazing bar sashes with moulded eaved surrounds, sills with aprons, and cornices. In the gable, there is a glazing bar Diocletian window with a stone surround and keystone. The roof features three glazing bar sash dormer windows with leaded segmental heads.

The elevation facing Park Gate mirrors the Bargate elevation but has a side entrance at the centre of the three-bay range on the ground floor. This entrance has a moulded surround and a narrow hood, topped by a semicircular opening with glazing bars, set within a moulded stone surround with a keystone and an open pediment. The interior has not been inspected.
