Description

The canal milepost at Swarkestone Stop, dating from 1819, was produced by Rangeley and Dixon. It is made of cast iron and features a circular stem with a shallow, segmentally curved plate near the top and a moulded circular head. Near the base of the stem, there is a raised quatrefoil inscribed with 'R and D Stone 1819'. The plate has two panels; the eastern panel is inscribed 'SHARDLOW 6 MILES' and the western panel reads 'PRESTON BROOK 86 MILES'. This milepost is part of a series along the Trent and Mersey Canal.
