Description

Lowes Bridge is a canal bridge built in 1770 by engineer James Brindley, with some minor repairs made later. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. The bridge features a wide segmental brick arch supported by tapering jambs, with plain brick spandrels and parapets that are topped with chamfered stone copings. On both sides of the arch, there is a plain stone plaque, and on the eastern side, there is a cast iron oval plaque inscribed with the number '15'. The underside of the arch has six iron reinforcements. The walls on either side of the arch splay outwards and finish in a tapering square. This bridge was built as part of the Trent and Mersey Canal.
