Description

This early 19th-century canal toll house, located at Swarkestone Stop on the Trent and Mersey Canal, has been altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with a hipped slate roof, featuring two brick ridge stacks and a dentilled eaves band. The building is two storeys high and originally comprised two bays, with a later addition of a canted end on the north side, facing the canal. The west front has two large, segment-headed windows with 20th-century casements on the south side, and a smaller, similar blocked window to the north, with a 20th-century glazed door below the segment head. Above, there are three 20th-century windows; two to the north, each single-light, and one 2-light window on the south. The canted north elevation has segment-headed openings on all sides, the front one with a 20th-century 2-light window, and the angled sides blocked. Above, flat-headed openings to all sides are present; the angled walls are blocked, and the front has a 20th-century window. The building was originally constructed as part of the Trent and Mersey Canal system.
