Description
This is a canal milepost from 1819, made by Rangeley and Dixon. It is constructed from cast iron and features a circular stem with a shallow, segmental curved plate near the top and a moulded circular head. Near the base of the stem, there is a raised quatrefoil inscribed with 'R and D.Stone 1819'. The plate has two panels: the eastern panel is inscribed 'SHARDLOW 1 MILE', and the western panel reads 'PRESTON BROOK 91 MILES'. This milepost is part of a series located along the Trent and Mersey Canal.
