Description
Shardlow School is a school building dating from 1834, designed in the Tudor style. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a brick plinth. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with hexagonal slates, complemented by moulded stone copings on the gables, which rest on moulded kneelers, and brick side wall stacks with a stepped eaves band.
The east gable wall includes a small stone bellcote at the ridge. The central part of the building has an advanced gabled bay that rises two storeys plus an attic, flanked by single-storey side wings with four bays. The central bay features a recessed and chamfered cross window at the front, along with a four-centred arched doorcase that contains a plank door on the east side. Each side bay has three similar cross windows, with the centre window on the east side missing its mullion below the transom.
To the west, there is a recessed four-centred arched doorcase set within a flat-headed surround, while to the east, a later gabled porch is present, featuring a plain sash window at the front and a plain door beneath a stone lintel. Above the porch, there is a 2-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, with similar single-light windows on either side. Above this, a single-light window is located in the gable. All windows are fitted with hexagonal paned iron casements, except for the central window in the east wing below the transom. The east gable wall also has a 3-light cross window with a blind quatrefoil above it and a blocked single-light window.
