Description

Shapwick County Primary School is a school building from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble with freestone dressings, featuring angle buttresses and slate roofs. The coped verges have squat finials and kneelers, and there are paired polygonal ridge stacks along with an eaves band. The building has a symmetrical Tudoresque frontage with separate entrances for boys and girls. It is a single storey with a layout of 1:5:1 bays, and the central portion includes tall 2-light stone-mullioned and transomed windows, along with a similar 3-light window in the center, all with labels. There are lower projecting porches on each side, and the front-facing gable has a ridge that runs at right angles to the facade. Each porch features a 6-panelled door set in a chamfered and dressed stone surround with a 4-centred head. The gable faces have blind niches, and there is a gabled ashlar bellcote to the right that houses a bell. A later addition is set back to the left.
