Description

The gate piers at the driveway entrance and the surrounding walling of Shapwick Manor date from the late 18th century to early 19th century. They consist of a pair of tall ashlar piers with chamfered angles and domed caps. A 20th-century gate is present but is not of special interest. On either side of the driveway, there is a run of coursed and squared rubble wall that stands 2 meters high, featuring dressed coping that ramps up at each end, with the right end topped by a ball finial.

To the left, there is a further section of walling that runs at right angles, bounding the south side of the gardens. This wall is 3 meters high and is made partly of coursed and squared rubble and partly of Flemish bond red brick. A former gateway that led to a path to the Church of St Mary is now blocked, and the piers here are topped with pineapple finials. Additionally, there is an attached section of brick walling that bounds the west side of the gardens and abuts Shapwick Manor, also standing 3 meters high. This structure is included primarily for its group value.
