Description

The dovecote in the grounds of Shapwick Manor is a medieval structure that underwent restoration in the 18th and 19th centuries and was re-roofed in the 20th century. It is built from coursed and squared lias rubble of two distinctly different types and features a conical slate roof topped with a polygonal wooden turret. The turret has pilasters at each angle and arches designed for doves, along with a domed lead roof and a wrought-iron finial. The dovecote is circular in plan and has a plinth with an offset on the west side. There is a low door opening with a dressed stone surround and a plank door fitted with strap hinges. The east side has three two-stage buttresses, and a non-conforming three-light casement window has been inserted high up on the west side. Inside, the dovecote is lined with nesting holes that extend from the floor to the eaves level.
