Description
This is a 17th-century dovecote located in the grounds of No. 7, Shapwick House Hotel. It was re-roofed in 1983/84 after sustaining damage from a falling tree. The dovecote is constructed from coursed and squared lias rubble and features a plinth with an offset, an eaves cornice, and an octopartite slate roof, along with a restored lantern topped with an ogee-shaped lead roof. It has an octagonal plan and no window openings, with a low door opening on the west side that has a chamfered and dressed freestone surround. The interior is fully lined with nesting holes from the floor to the eaves, and there is a central octagonal pier that also contains nesting holes. It may have been built around the same time as Shapwick House Hotel.
