Description
The Old School is a building dating from 1832, originally designed as a school and now converted into two cottages. It is constructed of red brick with gritstone dressings and features a plain tile roof, stone coped gables with moulded kneelers, a brick ridge stack, and a truncated gable stack. The building is single storey with a chamfered plinth.
The north elevation consists of five bays, with the right-hand bay being two storeys high, which was the master's house. This bay projects to form an L-plan and has no windows on the ground floor, while above it features a 2-light recessed and chamfered mullion window with a returned hoodmould. The return elevation has a similar 3-light window.
To the left, the symmetrical elevation of the school includes a full-height gabled porch at the center, which has a Tudor arched doorway with a square hoodmould, a panelled door, and an overlight. Above the door is a sunk panel inscribed with information about the funding of the school, and above that is a stone panel with "AD 1832" inscribed in relief. On either side of the porch are a 2-light and a 3-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, both with returned hoodmoulds, and the windows feature decorative geometrical patterned leading.
