Description
The Stanley and Stanley Common Parish War Memorial is located on Station Road in Stanley village. It is made of grey polished granite and features a tall obelisk that is square in shape, standing on a tapering granite plinth. The obelisk has polished panels on all sides, while the foot of the obelisk and the plinth are polished only on the front faces. The front face of the obelisk is adorned with an engraved laurel wreath at the bottom of the panel. The plinth is set on a two-stepped concrete base, with a rectangular marble tablet embedded in the front face of the top step.
The front panel of the plinth displays the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919. (6 NAMES) 'HEROES ALL, FOR US THEY DIED'." The marble tablet commemorates those who served in World War II, stating: "WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945 (4 NAMES)."
