Description

The war memorial in West Hallam, dating from around 1920, is constructed from sandstone ashlar and white marble. It features three steps leading up to a stone base designed as a tall chest tomb. The base has three white marble panels that list the names of those who died. The top corners are cut away, and decorative foliage motifs are incised between the panels. An inscription along the base reads "FOR GOD KING AND COUNTRY." A stone wreath leans across the steps, flanked by panels that commemorate those killed in the Second World War. The chest base has a moulded cornice and supports a sculpture depicting two soldiers—one standing and one kneeling—alongside a machine gun on a tripod, with oak leaves growing up the tripod. The base of the sculpture is inscribed with "ROLL OF HONOUR/MEN OF/WEST HALLAM WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-18."
