Description
The war memorial in Thame was built in 1920 and is made of Portland stone with bronze plaques. It features a square base with a short stone pier at each corner. Four shallow stone steps lead up to a large square stone with battered sides, which has a prominent bronze plaque on the front listing the names of all those from Thame who died in the Great War. Above this, the chamfered top of the stone supports a smaller battered stone with an additional inscription. Further up, there is an octagonal stone with a moulded base and carved entablature. The three front faces of this stone display bronze panels inscribed with the names of those who died in the Second World War. At the top, there is a tall Saxon cross with an octagonal shaft, featuring a band of quatrefoils at the base and blind arcading above. The memorial was unveiled by the Rt Hon David Lloyd George, Prime Minister, on 30th July, 1921.
