Description
The war memorial, located at the junction of Hall Road and Monument Court in Chopwell, was erected around 1919. It features a whitish granite statue of a soldier with his hands resting on a rifle. The memorial stands on a base of two steps, with a sloping panel on the south side that commemorates the people of Chopwell who died in the Second World War. The square pedestal has four elliptical-headed panels adorned with guttae, listing the names of those who fell in the Great War. Inscriptions on the base read: "WE ARE THE DEAD/ IF YE BREAK FAITH WITH US/ WE SHALL NOT SLEEP," and the frieze states "PRO PATRIA."
