Description

Derwentcote Cottage is a toll-house that has been converted into a private house, built around 1840. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, a plinth, and quoins, topped with a concrete-tiled roof. The building has a T-plan layout and is one storey high with two bays. The east elevation features two 2-light chamfered mullioned windows with fixed lights and glazing bars. The low-pitched hipped roof includes a central ashlar chimney with a plinth and top band. The left side facing the road has two single-light windows. At the rear, there is a chamfered stone surround to a 20th-century door, and a 3-light window in the rear wing that matches the style of the front windows. Historically, the lower road from the Tyne to Shotley Spa was first constructed around 1840 when Shotley Spa became a new commercial success.
