Description

NZ 15 NW CONSETT A 694 (North side) 1/3 Derwentcote Cottage

GV II Toll-house, now private house. Circa 1840. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, plinth and quoins; concrete-tiled roof. T-plan. One storey, 2 bays. East elevation has two 2-light chamfered mullioned windows with fixed lights and glazing bars. Low-pitched hipped roof has central ashlar chimney with plinth and top band. Left return to road has 2 single-light windows. Rear has chamfered stone surround to C20 door; 3-light window in rear wing in similar style. Historical note: the lower road from the Tyne to Shotley Spa was first made about 1840 when Shotley Spa was a new commercial success.
