Description
The High Spen War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St Patrick’s Church, near the driveway off Lintzford Lane. This memorial, made of light grey granite and approximately 4.5 meters tall, features a wheel-head cross atop a tall square pedestal. A sheathed sword is carved in low relief and appears to hang from the cross's belt on the front. The pedestal is set on a stepped base and is enclosed by a square kerbed area with low pyramidal pillars at each corner.
Each side of the pedestal has two recessed panels that hold dark stone plaques. The names of those who served in the First World War are inscribed in the upper panels, while the names from the Second World War are in the lower panels. The main dedicatory inscription is located in the upper panel on the front face, which reads: "BY THE LONG ROAD THEY TROD/ WITH SO MUCH FAITH AND WITH/ SUCH SELF-SACRIFICING BRAVERY/ WE HAVE ARRIVED AT VICTORY/ AND TODAY THEY HAVE THEIR REWARD (NAMES)." Additionally, the details of a soldier who died in 2007 are incised into the kerb at the front of the memorial.
