Description

The war memorial in Hawkhurst, erected in 1921, is a notable granite structure standing about 10 feet high. It is designed as a tall square casket with panels on all sides. The memorial features a moulded cornice adorned with anthemion carving, topped by a Celtic cross with a gadrooned base and a deep plinth. The front panel includes a moulded swag and an inscription, while the other panels list the names of those who fell in the First World War. Additional names from the Second World War are inscribed on the plinth. The entire monument is set on a York stone base, accompanied by three concrete steps and low cast iron railings.
