Description

Lorenden is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with extensions from the 18th century and alterations and cladding added in the mid-19th century. The building features a timber frame that is rendered, along with a tile-hung and red brick rear wing. It has a plain tiled roof and the front elevation is designed in a Gothic cottage style.

The house stands two storeys high with an attic, set on a plinth that has a moulded string course. There are gables on both the left and right sides, adorned with pierced and moulded bargeboards. A stack projects at the end right, along with a central moulded stack. The windows include triangular and moulded headed gable casements, as well as two 4-light mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor. The central entrance features a half-glazed moulded panelled door, flanked by triangular fanlights and side lights, all within a gabled porch that has pierced and moulded bargeboards. This porch is accessed by a flight of five steps with side walls.

Inside, the full framed structure is visible, showcasing quirk-and-tongue stopped-chamfered cross-beamed ceilings. The roof includes a side purlin with wind braces and a Queen post roof in the right cross wing, which was likely originally continuously jettied. There is a vaulted passage through the central stack, and the cellar is lined with English bond brick.
