Description

Neills Cottage is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations and extensions made in the 16th and 17th centuries. It features a timber frame clad with red and blue chequered brick on a sandstone base, and the first floor is tile hung. The roof is plain tiled and has an L-shaped plan consisting of two sections. The roadside elevation is two storeys high, with a two-storey and attic crosswing. The roof is hipped with a gablet on the right and a projecting gable on the left. There are stacks at the left end and clustered at the right end. The gable features a three-light wooden casement, while the first floor has two three-light casements and a two-light casement to the right. The ground floor has three three-light casements. A central 20th-century gabled porch with a casement and boarded door is located on the left side. To the left, there is a catslide outshot that extends along the left return elevation and slopes down to the rear, which includes a sandstone semi-basement and a late 20th-century extension.

Inside, the two wings are clearly of two different builds and are framed at right angles. The left wing has massive posts, ogee bracing, and a clasped purlin roof with diminished principals, which was originally jettied towards the roadside. It also features a blocked mullioned window and doorway on the first floor, possibly for a lost interior garderobe. The right section is thought to be a later addition but may actually be the earliest phase, albeit somewhat altered. The interior includes inglenook fireplaces.
