Description

The Elephants Head Public House is a public house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It features a timber frame that is partly exposed, with plaster infill on the first floor and painted brick infill on the return elevations. The ground floor has been rebuilt using sandstone. The building has a plain tiled roof and consists of a four-bay range with return wings. It stands two storeys high on a plinth, with a continuous jetty to the first floor supported by an ogee braced frame. The roof is hipped, with chimney stacks positioned to the right and clustered on the left.

There are two two-light windows and two central four-light windows on each floor. The central ground floor windows are set in shallow stone bays, while the first-floor windows have wooden casements and painted brick mullions on the ground floor. Rib and stud doors are located to the left and right. The left return elevation shows an exposed frame that is less altered, particularly on the ground floor, featuring irregular casements and a panelled door with a flat hood supported by brackets. There are outshots and single-storey extensions at the rear, and the right return is tile hung.

Inside, the pub has large brick fireplaces, exposed framing, and a largely 19th-century ground floor, with sandstone blocks that show weathering on the inner face, likely re-used from another location.
