Description
Down Farmhouse is a house that likely dates back to the 16th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 18th century, early and late 19th century, and late 20th century. The building features a timber frame, clad with sandstone on the ground floor and tile hanging on the first floor, while the rear wing, added in the 20th century, is made of red brick and tile hung. It has plain tiled roofs and follows a lobby entry plan.
The house is two storeys high with a garret, set on a plinth, and has a half-hipped roof with gablets and a cluster of stacks to the centre right. On the first floor, there are three two-light wooden casements, and on the ground floor, there are two three-light wooden casements along with a multi-panelled door located to the centre right, which is accessed through a gabled and trellised porch. To the right side, there is a two-storey 19th-century bay window with sash windows. At the rear, there is a parallel lower two-storey range that is also half-hipped, featuring glazing bar sashes and a panelled door in the re-entrant angle leading to the projecting 20th-century wing. Inside, large scantling framing is visible.
