Description

Down Cottages is an early 19th-century pair of houses, and possibly once three. The front is built of hammer-dressed sandstone with some red brick to the rear, and has plain tiled roofs. The cottages are two storeys high with a garret, and sit on a plinth. They have a central chimney stack. The window arrangement is regular, with two glazing bar sashes on each floor. The window to the right on the ground floor has been replaced with a 20th-century wooden casement, and there's a central wooden casement on the ground floor that may have originally been a doorway. All windows are set within raised stone surrounds. A single-storey extension to the right return has a glazed door within a glazed and gabled porch. The left return features a glazing bar sash window in the garret and a half-glazed door. A lower two-storey wing projects from the rear left, with the upper floor constructed of red brick.
