Description

Down House is a house built in 1810, which incorporates an earlier building from the 18th century and features a mid-20th century extension. It is constructed of red brick with a reported late frame at the rear and has a slate roof. The house has two storeys and a basement, along with a three-storey rear service section. Notable architectural features include a plinth, a rendered plat band, and paired modillion-bracketed eaves on the hipped roof, with chimneys located at the rear left and rear right.

The front facade has a regular arrangement of windows, with three glazing bar sashes on the first floor and two on the ground floor, all featuring gauged heads. There is an additional window to the right in a single-storey mid-20th century garden extension, and a basement opening to the left. The central entrance consists of double half-glazed doors adorned with Greek Key designs on the lower panels, set within a panelled surround that also features Greek Key and fluted decorations. Above the doors is a traceried semi-circular fanlight, and the entrance is framed by a large Doric porch with a frieze, a modillioned cornice, and a flight of five steps leading up to it.

On the right side of the house, there are two glazing bar sashes on each floor, along with steps leading down to a basement door. The rear section of the house has three storeys with irregularly placed glazing bar sashes and a multi-paned segmentally headed casement window on the return and rear elevations. Inside, the rear wing, although clad at the same time as the front section, has exposed late framing. The main staircase features an elliptical screen arch at the half landing, with turned balusters and a wreathed handrail.
