Description

Down Cottages is a pair of houses, possibly originally three, dating from the 17th century or earlier and largely re-clad in the 18th century. The houses have a timber frame and are clad with weatherboarding and red brick on the ground floor, with tile hanging on the first floor. They have a lobby entry plan, typical of their origin. The cottages are two storeys high, with a half-hipped roof on the left side, which steps up in the centre to a hipped roof on the right. Chimneys are located centrally, and project from the left and right ends. The left side has two-light wooden casement windows on each floor, while the right side has two three-light wooden casement windows on each floor. A ribbed door is located centrally, with a boarded door in the left return. A lower hipped wing returns to the right.
