Description
The war memorial, built in 1921, is a squat obelisk made of Cornish granite. It stands on a slightly tapering square pedestal that features boldly moulded capping. This pedestal is set on a stepped base, with the upper tier having a moulded top. The west face of the pedestal displays lead lettering that reads: "To the undying memory of our victorious dead who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918," along with the names of eight fallen soldiers. The north and south faces list an additional 43 names. The east face commemorates those who fell in the Second World War 1939-1945, with 14 names inscribed below. There are also seven names on the upper tier of the base and eleven on the tier below.
The memorial was unveiled on 6th March 1921 by Major General GD Jeffreys and was constructed at a cost of £162.15s.6d. War memorials hold significant historical and cultural importance, both locally and nationally. This particular memorial is a simple yet elegant obelisk located prominently in the town center.
