Description

The Spread Eagle Public House is a public house located in Upper Green, with a cellar dating from the 16th century and a main range built in the early 18th century. This main range features a projecting wing from the early 19th century, which is built over a core that dates back to the 15th century. The early 18th-century main range is a three-bay structure with a baffle entrance, constructed from stone with brick dressings and painted on the front. It has a hipped tiled roof with brick stacks. The building has a plinth and features 19th-century casement windows with shutters, along with two doors. The projecting 19th-century wing is made of painted brick and has a slate roof, although the rear section has a lower elevation with a steeply pitched tiled roof. The front of this wing contains a 16-pane sash window, which is cambered on the ground floor and has shutters on the first floor. Inside the early 18th-century wing, there are exposed axial beams with 2-inch chamfers and lambs tongue stops, along with wooden seats on either side and an 18th-century three-plank door to the side with old hinges. There are also doors and ironmongery reported on the first floor. The 15th-century dairy now serves as the cellar, which includes solid tread stairs that have been reported but not seen.
